to the official website of Iliochori! A beautiful village, with a name
that hides a meaning. Translated from Greek, ILIOCHORI means ''The
Village of the Sun'', justifying its radiant and captivating beauty. Iliochori
is historically known as Dobrinovo. Located in the region of Zagori, which
in Slavic language is known as "The Place behind the Mountains, Iliochori
forms an integral part of the Tymfis area. Iliochori is situated approximately
71 km to the Northeast of the city of Ioannina, in the midst of a beautiful
forest at an altitude of 1050 meters, amidst the majestic Tymfis mountains.
The village is surrounded by holm oak forests and the tallest pines in
the Mediterranean, creating an enchanting and serene atmosphere. The surrounding
landscape is covered by many rivers with characteristic stone bridges
that come down to the valleys. From Iliochori, visitors can enjoy the
beautiful view of Tymfis.
Iliochori is one of the many characteristic villages of the area, distinguished
by houses constructed from stone, featuring narrow and high windows, wooden
balconies, and traditional plaka roofs. A typical house in Iliochori is
surrounded by a courtyard that is accessed through large gates, embellished
with lintels covered in traditional plaka wood. Iliochori can host several
activities, including excursions on foot or by bicycle through the forests,
as well as exploring waterfalls and valleys along the Kriopotamos river.
Regarding religion, Iliochori is predominantly Orthodox Cristian, evident
by the presence of many churches that were constructed by hermits who
used them to pray. A few kilometres before reaching Iliochori, you can
find the village of the Vlachs, which attracts many tourists yearly; both
local and international.
Iliochori is found near the National Park of Pindos where you can still
find today brown bears; an endangered species that is protected by the
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
The inhabitants of Iliochori, or the Ilichorites, are known for
their warm hospitality. They take great pride in ensuring the comfort
of their guests and in sharing the local specialties of the region. The
Iliochorites are famous for their healthy kitchen which consists of traditional
dishes such as pies with wild grass, pumpkins, feta and eggs.
